Phantom of the Opera
Franc auditioned for the role of “Chris” in Miss Saigon, but impressed the producers so much that he left with the offer for the lead in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical - The Phantom Of The Opera. The Webber musical is based on the novel The Phantom Of The Opera by Gaston Leroux.
Franc was the youngest Phantom ever cast. He spent a year and a half on the road with the Original National tour, and five years with the production in San Francisco’s famed Curran Theater.
The musical, like the novel, focuses on the naive singer Christine Daae as she is seduced by a disfigured musical genius known as "The Phantom of the Opera." He lives underneath the Opera house and terrorizes those who work there. He demands that Christine (who he has fallen in love with) be the star of the theatre's productions. When the young singer turns away from the Phantom's advances, and her true lover Raoul intervenes, the Phantom sets no limitations in his quest for revenge and Christine's love.
Portraying the famed masked man - in the now legendary musical - close to 3,000 times, he brought more than five million theatre-goers to their feet for over six years. This earned Franc the title, “The World’s Longest Running Phantom”.
Because of Franc’s unique Phantom status, “Access Hollywood’s” invited him to serve as the red carpet correspondent for coverage of the American premiere of Joel Schumacher’s musical film production of The Phantom of the Opera (held in New York City December 12, 2004).
Anyone who has heard Franc’s haunting renditions of the music from this show know how masterfully he brings these songs to life. In fact, Franc’s performance of “Music of the Night” (skated to by Brian Boitano), during the “The 2005 Tribute to Movies on Ice” at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, received the evening’s only standing ovation.
Franc is featured on the special Christmas album recorded by the San Francisco cast of Phantom. His performance of “Panis Angelicus” on that album earned him a Grammy Consideration for Best Male Vocalist 1999.
